What is bruxism?
Bruxism is also known as grinding and/or clenching of your teeth. If you find yourself waking up with sore jaw muscles or a headache, you may be suffering from bruxism.
Bruxism can cause teeth to become painful or loose, and sometimes parts of the teeth are literally ground away. Eventually, bruxism can destroy the surrounding bone and gum tissue. It can also lead to problems involving the jaw joint, such as temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ).

Teeth Grinding vs. Clenching
Teeth clenching and grinding often occur subconsciously and are very similar. Grinding is the act of clenching plus moving your bottom jaw back and forth, which grinds away the enamel from your teeth. Unlike clenching, which can be silent, grinding will often produce a noticeable sound that could wake a sleeping partner.
Clenching is when your upper and lower teeth are held together with prolonged force. It may leave no visible signs, but clenching for longer than two seconds at a time can damage the roots of teeth, the trigeminal nerve, and the temporomandibular joint. Nighttime clenching often becomes an addictive habit, because part of the subconscious mind finds the sensation of clenching soothing.

What is TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint disorder means that the hinge connecting the upper and lower jaw isn't working properly. This hinge is one of the most complex joints in the body, responsible for moving the lower jaw forward, backward and side-to-side.
Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working as it should is called TMJ. Often, TMJ feels like your jaw is popping or clicking or even "getting stuck" for a moment. The exact cause of this misalignment is often impossible to determine.

Unlike Mouth Guards

Some users report that using the SleepGuard biofeedback headband allows them to train themselves to stop clenching for periods of time. We recommend that users wear the SleepGuard biofeedback headband each night for at least two months, to allow healing to take place.
Once you’ve reduced your clenching, you may choose to use your SleepGuard biofeedback headband less frequently.

As long as the mask you use with your CPAP machine does not have a support that takes up room on your forehead (where the SleepGuard biofeedback headband needs to sit) you can use the SleepGuard headband with you CPAP machine. Is the SleepGuard headband safe to use on children?
Dentists recommend against interfering with tooth grinding of children, because it is a natural part of how they shape their teeth. In addition, even though the SleepGuard headband is perfectly safe for children, and children may agree to use it in order to please their parents, subconsciously they don’t want to use it, and as soon as they fall asleep they reach up and take the headband off.
Since this pretty much always happens with children under the age of 16, and we don’t want children to feel they have failed their parents, we recommend against asking children to use the SleepGuard biofeedback headband.

The RelaxTone™ sound starts off very quiet, and then goes up to the volume you set if you don’t relax your clenching muscles.
Will it disrupt my sleep?
As long as you have done the recommended daytime practice so that you have trained a part of your subconscious mind to relax your jaw when the biofeedback sound is heard, you will be able to respond in your sleep without waking up.
